  • How To Create an Effortless Layering Look This Autumn

Leaves are starting to fall from the trees, the days are getting shorter, and pumpkin spice latte is coming back to your local coffee shop.

Yep, it’s autumn, and it is now the time to start planning for Halloween, Guy Fawkes and Christmas and, of course, it is time to pack your summer clothes away.

However, it can be hard to know how to dress in the somewhat awkward early autumn period; can you wear skirts? Is it too warm for trench coats? In this article, our team at Froxx will be walking you through how to pull off an effortless layering look with your clothes, which will keep you warm and look epic at the same time.

    Start With a Solid Foundation

When it comes to putting on layers, you need a comfortable and, more importantly, breathable base layer. This could be a long-sleeved top, a thermal top, or a cotton turtleneck. These will help to keep you warm, and they are ideal for the early days in autumn, when it is still quite mild. For plus sized clothing, which is used as a base layer, try to opt for natural fabrics, and try to ensure that all pieces are not mixed colours; a strong base colour such as cream, cappuccino, or even pumpkin orange will work!

    Mix and Match Fabrics

Now that the base is out of the way, it is time to look at fabrics.

You need to have a range of materials, and, for the most part, people will mix wool, flannel, denim, cotton, and cashmere. Try to put the more textured fabrics, such as hand-knitted wool items, close to the outer layer of the look. Envision a pair of faded denim jeans paired with a white base top, with a red flannel shirt over the top, and then a rusty red wrap with knotwork on the top. Pair it with a hat and boots, and you have an epic mix-and-match look!

    Get a Versatile Coat

For autumn layering, you need to invest in a versatile coat. For many women, this may look like a trench coat, which is medium weight, a denim jacket, or even a down vest. These can be matched with anything you put on, and, provided the weather doesn’t flip regularly, and they will keep you the correct level of warm, without cooking you or on milder days!

    Up The Proportions

Why not try pairing an elongated, exaggerated cardigan with skinny jeans? Or why not opt for leggings that are waist-high with a cropped jacket? Our Froxx team also thinks you could go the other way: wear a trench coat with a mini skirt with wool-based tights?

Break Out the Hats and Scarves

As any fashionista will tell you, autumn is the perfect time to break out the stylish hats (with hat pins) and the scarves! Try to go for complementary colours for the outer layer of your clothing, or the base clothing level. So, if you have an orange base layer, opt for a burnt amber hat or scarf.
